AP Bias Continues: Mark Warner's Six Billion Dollar Lie

Take a moment to compare these two accounts of the Virginia Republican Convention.  This AP article, and then Jeff Shapiro's piece.

The AP article does not have an author, but undoubtedly it's our good friend Bob Lewis, who I saw in attendance at the Convention.  Why?  Because it has this same old tired lie in it, he just can't help but print over, and over again:

"When Jim Gilmore was governor, he showed he could not work with a legislature controlled by his own party on important issues like the budget, so it's not surprising that members of his own party do not want to work with Jim Gilmore now," said Warner campaign spokesman Kevin Hall.

Warner on Saturday also e-mailed supporters a preview of a one-minute television ad that will debut statewide on Monday that features former Republican state Sen. John Chichester praising Warner for fixing a $6 billion budget shortfall rooted in Gilmore's administration.

Right out of Joseph Goebbel's:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

It is refreshing to see the RTD piece on the convention done without including wording from a Mark Warner press release.

I guess to some people integrity counts.

Then there's our good friend Senator Chichester, trotted right out to continue the lie.  Any doubts about what was really wrong with the GOP?  This guy is just bitter because he frittered away the Senate Majority given to him by Governor Gilmore.

By Warner and Dem logic, he left Kaine a shortfall of billions as well. So when are Kaine's folks going to start bashing Warner?

It was nice meeting you. I always look forward to beer, maybe soon.

Chichester just won't go away, will he?

Jason, I actually remember reading a piece awhile ago where Kaine tried blaming his current deficit on Gilmore as well. Remember, facts get in the way of democrats and their agenda

Ask Gov. Doug Wilder to go on videotape. Wilder had reduced revenue - as it happens in every recession - and cut spending. Mark Warner had lower revenue and raised taxes.

Ok now that we have the Gilmore nomination settled, bias or no bias in the press, how does Gilmore stop this runaway train that keeps implying Gilmore screwed up the budget big time?

Should Gilmore avoid budget shortfall talk?

Should Gilmore try to be the national security candidate?

Should Gilmore attempt to tie Warner to Obama?

Should he try a little bit of each?

We are in deep straights here folks, how can Gilmore turn the press PR machine around? If Gilmore cannot fix this situation, it will point blank cost him the election. I certainly don't have an answer. Its easy to call the press biased but we need more to even make this a race.

It'll take one heck of PR to make Gilmore palatable to the "masses".
He didn't do much for himself as governor, that's for sure!

June 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOttie

and Ottie if you call a $950,000,000 million dollar per year tax cut since 1998 not doing much.

Cutting college tuition 20% and freezing it for four years, not doing much.

Getting a record amount of $$$ into transportation, and getting Maryland and DC to cooperate in building the new Woodrow Wilson bridge without raising taxes, not doing much..

You may disagree with his social positions, but Gilmore is the Democrats worse nightmare... he did more for the working class in VA than any other Governor.

There is no doubt about it.

If each Virginian would just send him like $50 to Thank Him for just the car tax reduction that has saved each of us hundreds if not thousands of dollars each, a PR machine could be funded to crush Warner with his own record.

Maybe, just maybe, all those tax cuts and "savings" Gilmore achieved made it necesary for Warner to raise taxes.

Freezing college tuitions for four years (just for as long as HE was able to be governor), might be the reason the universities are raising their tuitions now. Just maybe?

With a single four year term, a governor can do a lot of damage without having to face the consequenses.

June 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOttie

I think its more like give the Democrat/ic Governors 6 years and see how much damage they can do....

How much in budget surpluses has VA had in the previous four budgets before the last? It's criminal to thrust those tuition increases on the students...

For goodness sakes, it costs $40,000 to get a degree in english or math? That's complete and utter BS! I hope the students and parents make ya'll pay dearly in November.

Could anyone possibly post a link to where they heard Kaine discuss his incoming shortfall. I'm trying to dig deeper into this and would appreciate any help.
